Volunteer Coordinator Spotlight James McKinnon-Burrows

James is an incredible member of the dragon boat family and is a valued leader of our on site Volunteer Services Team. James has worked with both the festival's summer and winter volunteer teams mentoring our volunteers and leading them with his calm, happy demeanor. We recently sat down with James to discuss a variety of topics and what he enjoys most about the festival.

What is your role at the festival?

Volunteer Coordinator

What year did you become involved?

2019

You wrote a great article called “THE VOLUNTEER PARADOX: IN GIVING, WE RECEIVE”, upon revisiting it now do you have any additional thoughts?

Impressive writing ;). Also, I’m pumped to meet all the awesome new volunteers!

What is your most memorable moment from the festival?

The Sun. The Sand. The feeling of community and accomplishment at the end of the day. And all the happy athletes!

What do you do for fun when not at the event?

I am the father of two young children, so… everything I do is fun! *sighs*

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I once tried to use peanutbutter for grilled cheese, and boy was my face red.

What’s your favourite summer pastime?

Definitely playing in the dirt (pretending I know how to landscape). And swimming.

What makes Canada the best Country in the world?

Diversity. Hockey. And Poutine for the win.

What book are you currently reading?

“The Lincoln Highway”, by Amor Towles. And, Neil Young’s Auto-bio “Waging Heavy Peace”

Your dragon boat springs a leak and strands you on a deserted island. What are your three must haves?

Family. Friends. Dragon Boat repair kit.

Planes, Trains or Automobiles, and why?

Automobiles. My childhood dream of becoming a racecar driver.

Cats or Dogs?

Cats of course. *gulp* (Lilah is watching me… shhh. it’s actually dogs!)

What is your favourite:

  • Sport? Hockey.

  • Concert? Jane’s Addiction, 2001 @ the ACC.

  • Book? Not a fair question.

In closing, what would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with the festival?

Beach. Bands. Boats. All in one place!? There’s a reason we all keep coming back!
