It All Begins…

Thursday, June 20 at 5:00 PM when the grounds open for tons of on-site activities including the weekend-long beach events: an OCR Academy obstacle course, BATL Grounds axe throwing, and beach volleyball. As we enter the first summer weekend of 2019, it’s the perfect time to enjoy a cold beer from one of the licensed bars on-site.  The evening’s festivities will be highlighted by free licenced all ages concerts from local artists Half Moon Run, Jacquie Neville, Vile Bodies on the Rideau Carleton Casino Hillside Stage.

Friday, June 21 hosts the Parade of Champions, which consists of competing teams marching through the site showcasing their colourful array of uniforms, costumes and team spirit. The parade is led by the RCAF Pipes and Drums, who boast the distinction of being Canada’s longest continuous serving Air Force Pipe Band. As the excitement builds, spectators and competitors gather on the beach in Paddler’s Paradise for a performance from the Success Lion Dance Troupe who kick off the races Opening Ceremony. C5 will then sing the National Anthem prior to the Eye Dotting Ceremony to mark the official awakening of the dragon! The boats hit the water soon after for weekends first set of races, the ODBF Charity Challenge Cup, which are in support of the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation and its philanthropic efforts. The fun continues with the Greatest Kitchen Party ever with free concerts from Alan Doyle, Jane’s Party, and Basic White.

The sun will be hot, the beer will be cold, and the ice cream will be plentiful for the races on Saturday & Sunday. Starting at 8:00 AM both mornings, races will take place every 8 minutes until 4:00 PM, meaning non-stop fun and excitement all day. More free concerts and family programming continue throughout the weekend as the Rideau Carleton Casino Hillside Stage hosts Jess Moskaluke, Sacha, and The Dill on Saturday night, and USS, Dubé, and Trails on Sunday.

The Children’s area will keep families happy throughout the weekend with a full line-up of spectacular characters including: Mascots from Ottawa’s Championship Teams, visitors from a galaxy far far away…, an Ottawa Fire Services truck, Royal Princesses, and so much more.

Older folk can enjoy the OCR Academy course, where their physical and mental fortitude will be put to the test, and learn axe-throwing technique from our friends at BATL Grounds. They can also show off their skills in a riveting game of beach volleyball.

Don’t forget your sunscreen, your water bottle to refill at the free hydration station, and your appetite to experience many of the delicious culinary treats in the vendors and exhibitors areas.

The action comes to a spectacular finish on Sunday with the awards ceremony beginning at 4:00 pm where participants bask in the glory of having joined other paddlers in a fun-filled and competitive weekend for a great cause.

The Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival is made possible by the continued support of Canadian Heritage’s Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage, Celebrate Ontario and the City of Ottawa Partnership Program.
