Since Thomas died, the couple has become involved with organizations like the Canadian Transplant Association and the Ronald McDonald foundation, with whom they have consulted with to build a new common room and patient family rooms at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. They've also co-ordinated representation by transplant recipients and families at the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival and Ottawa Race Weekend.

I can’t believe the blog has gone on for eight seasons and as usual, it’s that time to wrap up the blog and radio show (currently on season four) for the Summer. On this week’s show, there was the interview with the Toronto band, Born Ruffians as they were in Ottawa on the weekend for the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. You can listen to the interview below the entry. Note: The version on the blog is a full version as we discussed about social media. The radio show version was edited.

The Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival took over Mooney’s Bay this weekend marking the 20th Anniversary of the Festival and the 10th Anniversary for Festival CEO, John Brooman at the helm. In the 20 years of the event it has grown from a half day event with 27 teams, to what it is today, a four day event with 200 teams, 5,000 paddlers, 500 volunteers and over 85,000 attendees, making it North America’s largest dragon boat festival.

With close to 200 boat teams, there was always something happening on the water so, similar to what I did for the Friday night blog, what follows is a series of snapshots of some of teams that passed by my point on the beach (not necessarily in order of race heats).

The Sam Roberts Band hit the stage next to a crowd that was well warmed up. It was certainly a treat having these two great Canadian acts on stage at a free concert. I’m only disappointed that the weather didn’t hold out all weekend.

The boats themselves were ready for the evening’s challenge and had been newly decked out with their polished dragon heads and the drummer’s drums were safely secured in the bow of the boat.

Around 500 people attended the inaugural Tiki Beach Gala in support of the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival on Thursday night. The sold-out event held at Mooney’s Bay beach featured six different food tents featuring cuisine from all around the world, entertainment and an auction. “It’s a great atmosphere, great weather for it and something different which is kind of nice,” said one guest.

The 20th annual Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival is this weekend. Since its inception in 1993, thousands of participants have gathered at Mooney’s Bay Park on Riverside Drive in Ottawa to race. Admission to the festival is free to spectators. In 1998 the “Pledge Challenge” was added to help with fundraising for local charities. In the evenings leading up to the festival the teams can be seen training at Mooney’s Bay. I used my 70 – 300mm to capture the teams in their dragon boats. Except for the first 2 pics the boats were very far from where I was standing on shore. My D600 is full frame so the pics are very large and I was able to crop them.
