Israelis are about to be exposed to the fastest-growing water sport in the world: dragon boat racing. The “ultimate team sport” will make its debut at the country’s first Dragon Boat Festival on Lake Kinneret (the Sea of Galilee) on May 17-18 next year.

“We heard about dragon boat and how it’s been such a phenomenal success … It’s such a fun event,” said Tamir Executive Director Mark Palmer about their decision to enter the festival. Palmer explained that participating in the festival is not only about the day of the race. “It’s about the preparation and becoming a team together,” he said.

Tim Horton's Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival (THODBF) provided not only a fun-filled weekend of free family friendly entertainment but also raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities. According to development officer for THODBF Megan Davis, overall the festival participants raised $310,000 (amount available by print date) and the number keeps rising as they continue to finalize details.

Prior to performing, I had a good walk around at the festival (in Mooney’s Bay Park) and to my amazement, it was packed with a lot of people walking around checking out the vendors... Overall, kudos to the board of directors and staff of the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival for making the event fun, passionate and successful.

The 18th annual Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festivalofficially begins on Saturday! Lucy and I have volunteered for the past three years but have never gotten the chance to fully enjoy the actual dragon boat racing event. I can’t wait until the races begin this year because I’ll be getting the opportunity to ride in the media boat and take photos of the racers. Wahoo!

The Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival (THODBF) has finalized its exciting 2011 free entertainment line-up with the addition of Lafleche Dumais, crooner performer, with the Handle With Care band on Sunday, June 19, presented by Allegro Residences.
