I think I’m going to have to lower my expectations a little bit when I eat at festivals and events... Anyway, Christine and I had a blast at the Dragon Boat Race Festival, and we’ll probably return as volunteers next year. We will have to ensure that we have one day to wander around and photograph the event itself because I was only armed with a shitty camera phone. Oops!

METRO OTTAWA: A PADDLING SUCCESS
Posted: June 22, 2009

“We had a ton of spectators,” said the festival’s development officer Rosemary Vaughan. In its 16th year, the event is possibly the best ever, said John Brooman, executive director of the Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival and the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation. Mooney’s Bay has been a great venue, Brooman said. “The water is renowned for being one of the best places to paddle in North America,” he said. While this serves to attract competitive paddlers from far and wide, this year, the event seems “more community oriented,” as more local teams have signed up, Brooman said. Vaughan estimated that 80 per cent of the participants are from Ottawa.

METRO OTTAWA: 'BEST EVER' DRAGON BOAT FEST
Posted: June 21, 2009

Maggie Cartwright isn’t a paddler. But it didn’t stop the Montreal resident from coming out to what organizers are calling the "best ever" Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival yesterday. "I haven’t missed it in about three, four years," she said. "I love the boats and the energy of it all. This beach is so lovely. And there is such great music this year that you don’t have to (be involved in dragon boat) to come here." Cartwright wasn’t alone. While there were 5,000 paddlers on 190 teams from Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Kingston and the U.S., spectators far outnumbered the participants when more than 60,000 people came out to Mooney’s Bay this weekend.

For now, I just wanted to let everyone know that Ottawa's 2009 Dragon Boat Race Festival will be starting tomorrow and will be finished on Sunday, June 21st, 2009! The 16th annual event will be held at Mooney's Bay, once again. And you know what? Admission is free! There won't be parking spots available to the public, so I suggest that you take advantage of the shuttle buses (provided by OC Transpo). Lucy and I are very excited to be helping out this weekend! The weather looks like it'll cooperate, so put on your summer gear and head on over! We wish you a happy weekend!

The best fests in life are free. Ottawa’s 16th annual non-profit Dragon Boat Festival is coming up this weekend at Mooney’s Bay, with free admission to spectators. Although it is North America’s largest dragon boat race festival, “the Dragon Boat Festival is the best-kept secret in Ottawa,” said executive festival director John Brooman. “It’s a free event that offers everything from team building for the racers to live shows for adults and children.”

OTTAWA CITY GUIDE BLOG: FIRE BREATHING DRAGON BOAT
Posted: June 02, 2009

Before reading up on the subject, I always considered the dragon boat to be a war ship historically. I thought the Norse Karve – what with the teams of oarsmen – was a European version; warriors propelling themselves over rough seas, on route to clash boats. It turns out I wasn't far off. The ancient Chinese raced these long boats as a way to honour the dragon, the mythical creature that controls the rain and the force of the water already on Earth. The celebrations got serious though, when sacrifices were made. If a boat tipped, the people that fell in were not helped, as it was seen to be jinxing fate. Paddlers would literally battle as well, either with stones or stalks of bamboo, any deaths occurring being seen as gifts to the Gods, ensuring prosperous crops.
