OTTAWA CITIZEN: OUR CANCER SURVIVORS ARE 'BUSTING OUT' TO GET EXERCISE IN PADDLING A DRAGON BOAT
Posted: July 07, 2008

Columnist Julie Mason is absolutely right about the benefits of exercise for cancer patients. I am a cancer patient with recurring breast cancer after six years. The first time it was stage one, now it's stage four. I have just finished chemotherapy. Dragon boating is another form of exercise which is very beneficial and is a big part of the life of many breast cancer survivors in Canada and in other countries. I am part of the dragon boat team, Busting Out, which is part of Breast Cancer Action Ottawa.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: HERE THERE BE DRAGON BOATS
Posted: June 22, 2008

"Dragon boating has a particular technique," said Marilyn Stuart, captain of Cascades, a team that trains for dragon boating events year round and will be competing at the club crew world championships in Malaysia in August. "Not only do you have to be technically perfect, but you've got to be part of a team. "You've got to be in-stroke, you've got to be going in the water at the same millisecond and you've got to be coming out of the water at the same millisecond. ... It's a science." On Mooney's Bay yesterday, the most disciplined crews of 20 stroked in perfect unison, slicing through the water as team drummers pounded out the paddling rhythm while coxswains maintained a straight path.

With a sponsorship agreement in place with waste management firm BFI Canada to collect cans, bottles and plastic containers, the Dragon Boat festival has joined other Ottawa festivals with their own recycling systems and is one of a growing number of environmental initiatives introduced by local organizers. "Attendees would like to see more and more recycling and greening," said Ottawa Festivals executive director Barbara Stacey. "(From) festival goers, there's a lot of feedback. In a general sense we are all about that as a society these days. There is more of a push for that."
