Thanks to an increase in grant funding, things will be even more lively this year, with more music and family entertainment throughout the site. “We are thrilled to present an increased variety of quality performers this summer,” said John Brooman, executive director of the dragon-boat festival. New features include an opening ceremony, a parade of champions and a new stage in the beer garden.

Canadian folk-rock legends Spirit of the West, Juno-winning singer-songwriter David Usher and Ottawa’s indie folk outfit The Acorn will play free concerts as part of this year’s expanded Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. The 19th edition of the festival starts Friday at 5 p.m. and runs through Sunday at Mooney’s Bay Park.

last night marked the beginning of this year’s increasingly popular Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival 2012, and I popped by Mooney’s Bay to soak in the evening sun and catch some of this year’s bands. What’s even better is that these events are free all weekend, which means people of all walks of life can witness some great Canadian bands in action – from families to die-hard fans.
