Benita Baker: Sea Lions race in Ottawa's annual Dragon Boat Festival

Ottawa’s Sea Lions Dragon Boat team has done it again. For the second year in a row, this group of 22 indomitable women – Lions of Judah, their daughters and invited guests – joined together as competitors and fundraisers at the 17th annual Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, June 18-20, at Mooney’s Bay. The festival, which has raised more than $1.8 million since its inception, is the largest event of its kind in North America. Promoting teamwork, team spirit and community support, it brings people of all ages and abilities together for a lively athletic and fundraising challenge.
The Sea Lions once again demonstrated their fundraising prowess. Competing against 5,000 paddlers from 190 teams, they raised $25,864 and, like last year, placed third in the fundraising race. With painted faces and official Sea Lions shirts and life-jackets provided by sponsors Westboro Flooring and the docweissband, the group’s enthusiasm was contagious. “Paddling is a fantastic team-building experience and a perfect partnership,” said team captain Debbie Weiss. “Added to that is the opportunity of having fun and, as Lions of Judah, continue our tradition of reaching out to others with our time and our dollars.”
